Vik Muniz: Photographs & Personal Articles

Ubu Gallery presented an exhibition featuring two bodies of work by the Brazilian-born conceptual artist Vik Muniz. The first body, entitled Personal Articles, consisted of fantasy newspaper pages containing imaginary news stories accompanied by computer-manipulated photographs which are printed on newsprint and presented deadpan, without explanation. The complete set of sixty was displayed. The second body of work, entitled Photographs, consisted of a dozen small paintings/drawings, which Muniz created from memory after snapshots found in family albums. All the works maintain the appearance of the vernacular photographs from which they are derived, and provoke thoughtful consideration not only about reality, personal remembrances and common experience, but they also present the interaction between photography and drawing.
