FIAC 2014
October 23, 2014 - October 26, 2014
Ubu Gallery is pleased to have participated in FIAC 2014. In collaboration with Galerie Sophie Scheidecker, Paris, Ubu Gallery presented a thematic exhibition focusing on the Surrealist landscape.
The subversion of the real was an insatiable fantasy explored in Surrealism. The Surrealists transformed Landscape from a natural, concrete representation of a physical location to an abstracted, imaginary internal plane, representing figurative or metaphysical places or the subjective space of the mind. The prevalence of non-traditional landscape works by surrealist artists indicates their desire to integrate this new mode of representation into fine art discourse.
World war drastically altered land- and cityscapes, introducing the elements of destruction, debris and ruin. Artists sought to escape this trauma by turning towards the unconscious–as nature was no longer a poetic beauty–in order to express the sublime. Melancholic and fragmented, this new uneasiness of self was projected onto the traditional landscape scene.
Ubu Gallery was located at Booth 0.E38, Grand Palais, Paris. Please take a virtual tour of our booth.
